Does the strong tag help SE listing when it encompasses one of your keywords?

I never use <strong> tags. My SEO is limited to keywords once in title, once in description, once h1,
once bold, once alt and once italic. I do not use multiple keywords, just the phrase i am targeting. My description is short, encompassing my kw phrase. The rest is down to unique content, pyramid site structure and good quality relevant inbound links.
IMHO this is slightly under-optimised but has yet to trip any filters. My pages do well in most major se's.
