Serps versus Directories...how do I know where my site stands?

Call me a little blind here, but its been awhile since I have posted for various reasons. I have 3 travel sites, all receiving not so great hits. One is listed on ALL of these~ Overture, MSN, Yahoo and Google, Jeeves, and some others, however I keep reading things about the difference between being listed on YAHOO Serps ... and GOOGLE Serps, compared to being in the "directories" for both. How can I tell which one it is, SERPS or DIRECTORY? I have NEVER paid for an inclusion, and my sites are all travel related. I have tweaked my pages right and left, but the most unique hits per day, I have ever received on any of my sites has been 46. I may be interested in paying for inclusion to some but afraid if I start and get into that trap and later drop it, my ranking will go way down, since most will penalize you for that, as a way of sticking it to you. I've also considered having someone tweak my web pages, that does it more on a "professional basis" to try and get me better results for the keywords I wish to target. However I worry about being "taken" and not seeing any increase in hits overall. Anyone know of a company who is reasonable and has a good track record for doing this?
Or a way to get my other sites listed on Yahoo and MSN for free? I have tried the so-called non premium submits for both but its taking what seems like forever, like 8 months for one....all of my websites are over a year old, one is 3 years old. I have even submitted again but yet no luck. Help~!

Wow. You are asking about numerous topics there and there isn't one single answer. I'll touch some.

Travel is very competitive.

Noisy music on a web page makes me immediately go away. Go to another forum where they do site reviews and get some opinions.

You need to be in the SEs and directories. Where does your site stand? Search for the terms you expect users to use.

Google ranking is getting harder to understand. Read the comments in the Google forum. Yahoo Search seems easier to understand. I am not in the travel niche so I don't know which engine is particularly better for your audience. In my niche, Google gives me more conversions than Yahoo.

Over to others to add.
