Resetting file associations

Netscape 4 stole them all

I just installed Netscape 4 for testing purposes. To my dismay, it took the file associations away from FireFox so that now it is being used whenever I click a link from another program or a desktop shortcut.

Actually I did eventually manage to "fix" some of the problems by editing the File Types for my computer. But whenever I click a hyperlink in Word, up pops NN4. So I'm assuming I missed something somewhere . . .

The thing that really bugs me about this is that during the NN4 install, I carefully unchecked all the boxes where it wanted to associate itself with different file extensions. Clearly it didn't obey my instructions.

Any ideas?

Thanks,

Matthew

The problem is Netscape is now your default browser.
I know with IE once you open it, if it is not the default then it will prompt you asking whether you would like it to be the default browser. If this isnt the case with Firefox google has the answer:

Just do a search for
"make firefox default browser"

the first result should do the trick

Well, I appreciate the advice, but that's not the problem. ;)

I checked several online references and followed the instructions. Basically you just go into Tools > Options > General and check to see if FireFox is the default browser. It is. Furthermore, links from some programs (like Outlook) open in FireFox. Other programs (like Word) open NN4. The latest annoyance is trying to open the PhotoShop Elements help file, which is also using NN4 (which messes it up terribly).

I've tried looking around for more file associations, but they're all set to FireFox. I'm guessing there's a registry entry somewhere that is causing this behavior, but I can't find it.

Any more ideas? It's a relatively small annoyance, but it's really getting under my skin . . .

Thanks,

Matthew

I remember this behaviour from a while back - shame I can't remember precisely how to fix it... Have you tried setting IE to be the default first, then switching the default back to Firefox after that? IE tends to be good at grabbing control for itself, too.

That did it - many thanks, encyclo!

That's the first nice thing IE has ever done for me! ;)
