Getting Slashdot to Link to You

But not getting "Slashdotted"

I'm a big slashdot fan and regularly submit stories to the geek site.

When you submit a story to slashdot, you are allowed to input the URL of your website (or homepage) which will be displayed as a link within the story itself.

So last week my very first story was accepted by slashdot and my list was posted.

Google picked on this link the same day.

I was wondering, will this help my PR? Slashdot I'm sure bleeds PR like crazy, but my site was only on the homepage for 8 hours or so.

Is submitting articles to slashdot a nice way of getting a link?

The backlink to your site will remain in the article archives permanently, but as you say, Slashdot is the kind of site which has a million links to a million sites.

I'm not too sure it'll have too much of an impact of your PR, but if you can use such sites to deliver news articles relevant to the target audience and such, it is good viral marketing and can improve the visibility of your site, and give you a short-term sales boost.

If all you want is a load of backlinks, just add your site to your sig and start posting - but there is a lot of marketing going on in the majority of comments, so it's difficult to make your voice heard unless you are particularly insightful (or funny!).
