Hello Guys and Girls,

I hear alot of people say that having lots of pages indexed on google will help your rankings, is this true and also how much pages should I have? I currently have 350 pages indexed.

Thanks,

Welcome to WebMasterWorld Kneetesh!

As for your question. The advantage you have for more pages is the fact that you may get more returns on those pages in the SERPs. However, I don't think that having more pages increases ranking.

Case in point...

I have a site that is ranked #1 for some very competative key phrases. It has ranked that way for almost 3 years. The site has about 12 main pages along with 10 pages of products for sale. So what is that? About 22 pages. That is not a very large site.

I think if your topic is very narrowly defined and legit then your site may have more weight. Though this is part of how engines like Iky and Google add things up.

A 10 page web-site may rank above a 400 page web-site merely because of word placement and such.

If your site legitly has narrowing and more defined topics that other pages with the main topic mention... Google will say...ok, this guy has a lot of specific topics (words) that relate with this word. Since those words are on pages that link back to his main page (your main word) they MAY give you more weight in that regards.

1.) Main word
2.) Secondary Main word
3.) Secondary Main word

4.) Other site Main word
5.) Other site Secondary Main word
6.) Other site Secondary Main word

If Google sees 5 and 6 linking to 4, and sees on your site you have similer words, it will validate your structure and assume that 2 and 3 have more relevance because an independent alien site has a similer structure.

Then your main word may have more weight.

That's my theory.

Of course I say, work on good content and a good display of that content! When we search the net, we don't always go for the top pages if WE REALLY WANT THAT INFO :-)

Not sure if I believe this. I think keyword proximity and incoming links play the most important roll. The site I talk of is in a VERY competative market. The problem I had is the desired keywords actually relate to 2 very big markets that are not related. I compete with web developers AND this other major industry. The keywords are highly sought after by both industries and return about 7,000,000 in the SERPs. That is not very narrowly defined.

Sometimes I think I am just lucky :-) I actually get emails from other webmasters on how I did this. I really don't know! Just read a lot of posts on WebMasterWorld!

Another thought on this thread and something I forgot to mention.

I think word relationships also have a lot to do with it. If you have a site that is about custom widgets, try to include words that are related to your money phrases. This works especially well in google.

i.e.

customizable widgets
personalized widgets
custom-made widgets
made-to-order widgeting
customizable widgeter

You get the idea...
