Mass Emails Marked as SPAM

A few months ago we began sending monthly mass emails to optin users--well received by most by the way.

As we've grown our list, so have the number of users marking our email as spam--as a percent of total emails sent it remains about the same, but my concern is the total number each month that decided to mark us as spam even though they opted in.

Is this behavior typical among users? Is there an "industry average" acceptable spam percentage? What does marking an email as spam truly mean--I can identify any email as spam with the click of a button in Yahoo mail, but I'm not certain what it does.

Thanks.

A client had this problem

We fixed it by changing the way users could unsubscribe- made it so they could unsubscribe by following a link rather then having to send an email. We also gave users the option to change the frequency of emails.

No stats that i can remember, sorry.
