Can Link exchange do any good?

Will Link exchange do something good with search engine postioning?

Hi,

Many people asks for Link exchanges, also, Some Directories where we submit resources, asks us to link back.
Will this 1-1 link exchange do any good thing in SE marketing? Will google consider such link backs in its ranking algorithm?

Quantity does not matter (Well, at least I think!)
the trick is to link with highly ranked sites
and those sites to offer reciprocity

actually, quantity does matter. but quality matters too. look up the basic pagerank formula to see that.

on the other hand, who you link to can seriously hurt your rankings. if you link to a site with high pr, fine. (and if you get a link from them, even better.) but if you link to a number of sites that have 0 pr, don't be surprised if you go to 0 pr too.
