I just found a website that offers a free sony handicam after I sign up for some type of deal (columbia dvd club or something).
Is this for real?

You'll probably have to enter your credit card info at some point to "verify" something or other. I did some online shopping recently and was offered some kind of credit if I completed a survey. So I answered all the questions and at the end they wanted my CC info. Very not cool.

There are hundreds of thousands of those types of scams over the internet, remember almost nothing is free and if it sounds too good to be true, it is ;).

Maybe give it a shot with a CC that's about to expire, or test to see if the verify it by entering a bad #.
I'll bet they'd ask you for a CC# to bill you for shipping, then sign you up for recurring charges for something.
