Need A Guiding Light

Hello,

I am confused and lost as I try to get my website ranked #1 in google for a certain keyword. I am confused becasue the current #1 position of the keyword i am looking for has only 8 occurences of the keyword and I have 72. I would like some advice on where I should start to get my website listed.

P.S. My website does not even appear in the first 1000 listings.
