How would I go about selling ads directly on my site?

There's also potential to let others sponsor pages

I'd like to try selling ads directly to cos. that have products my visitors would be interested in. I'd also like to try selling "page sponsorships" like a popular UK site in my space does. In fact, i have built this site on the model used by the UK site.

Now how in heck do I go about determing what to charge them?

Is $100 a month too little? Too much? Just about right?

Also will Adsense allow me to have a page sponsor for the same page its ads are appearing on?

You need to find customers first!

If you can't then just adsense the page or site, and no - i don't believe that you can use any other form of advertising system in conjuction with adsense, if they catch you - they will drop your account!

Why not continue with adsense, and offer the space for advertising and see if you can get customers, then drop the adsense of the page, once you have paid up customers - usually the potential advertisers are going to be fully aware of banner based advertising, hence make sure what they are getting is a deal - content targetting and traffic wise.

Adsense is a let down, quite frankly. What I'd like to do is sell page sponsorships. In return the sponsor gets to the entire page and fills it up with an article on his goods or services. No banner ad is involved, but the sponsor doed get a hotlink to his site.

This seems to work well for the UK site.

Search for "text link advertising" you'll find links to auction your own or brokers who will sell it for you.

You really should read some of the threads here at webmasterworld [google.com] and understand the risks before you jump in.
