How often do you manually check your links?

Doing it by hand

Automated link checkers are pretty good for finding expired domains and 404's, but they don't catch it all. I decided to blitz my links manually for once, and found a lot of dead ones in there. Often people close a site and leave a "site closed" page, or a "site moved" page which leads to a dead one, or the content is completely altered. There's no way you could write a bot that would catch them all.

This is something I only do once in a blue moon, say every six months, but I always seem to find something so it's worthwhile. Is anyone else off to clear out the clutter?

My company manually checks it's links every two months or so, and it really gets the job done.

I do this religiously once a month. I have quite a few "outside" links on a couple of sites, and it's pretty amazing how often a number of them are dead.

If I had TONS of links, I don't know that I could do this so often.... it's incredibly time consuming, of course, and by the time I'm done I usually have a stress cramp between my shoulder blades....

Manual link checking is a good job for hiring teenage help from your neighbourhood. Just be sure they know to leave the links in your Adsense panels alone!

Once every month works for me. I also use a bot to check once every five days. If you use both of them right you can't go wrong.

I came across this:

[www-class.unl.edu...]

I wouldn't be surprised if those sorts of figures were common for all topics, not just science education.

Thankfully, I HAVE no neighborhood teens.
