Are you penalised for having too many pages

I was wondering if anyone had experience in finding out if a website with say 200 unique pages would rank better than one with say 35?
I have a site that has alot of pages, whereas a competitor of mine has a lower PR and only 35 pages on his site and he is ranked ALOT higher than me.

More likely to be that he has more inbound anchor text links.

Ignore PageRank - it's a red herring.

What do you mean by inbound anchor links?
