Creating a directory site

I have no idea how to go about creating a directory site, similar to [dmoz.org,...] except only covering a certain niche. And it wouldn't index sites, it would index poems.

I need to know the lingo or terminology relevant to directory sites. Do I need a content management system for updating, adding, and editing poems? What about something that updates internal links automatically when I change them, in the related poems and breadcrumb navigation, etc.

As you can tell from this post, I know nothing about where to begin. I wouldn't know how to tell a programmer how to do it.

Creating a directory at the beginning is always hard, so don't feel bad! :)

Go to hotscripts.com and search there to find the right directory for you, at least they should have one or two that will help you out.

[google.com...]

Surprising, isn't it?

Perhaps my post was a little confusing.

I basically want a list or description of common features, in plain English, of directory sites in general.

That way, I'll be able to gain time and effort from learning about features others have thought pertinent to directory sites.

Furthermore, I'll be able to explain more clearly to the programmer what it is I want.
