I have a project coming up that will require me to outsource. The project will be pretty big, bigger than a couple web designers could handle.

How do you find a firm that does web design, uses something similar to RUP methodology, has project managers, etc... and does reputible work?

Obviously you can't tell from their website....

No you can't really tell from their website.

Maybe a phone call and some face time would be useful.

It's very difficult hiring a sub-contracted web design team. Web designers come in all flavors these days, from big firms to one man shops in their living rooms.

Not to disparage the one man shops at all - some of those people might be quicker, more dependable, and less expensive than their corporate counterparts.

You might ask any of the administrators or moderators here if they are looking for extra work.

Or post something in the commercial exchange to see what shakes.

But it is difficult to choose the right one on the first try. A lot of it comes down to trust and faith.

I highly recommend you try finding a freelance developer somewhere like rentacoder.com (moderator pls edit if too specific)and get developers to bid on your project. I just tried it for the first time and I'm very happy with the results and the security in the process.

you can a do a search in google. Pick around 10 companies. FOr examplem with [google.com...]

Pick around 15 websites, send them your requirments (in BCCs) and get their response time, replied details and Communication.

As a second step you can call them of have a few email discussions. Do not keep Price as top factor, you may loose good quality people.

Finally get their demo applications, Samples and then look for a long term relationship.

A good contract would be nice, But many formal ways are not used in these days. Trust is mutally needed.

If you are not paying upfront, given them the hope and give a relaistic plan to them.
If paying upfront always ensure that you have all teh recent work done.

Finding a good reliable firm is an art and not just business. Its win-win and this should be clearly presneted between each other.
