I have just found out (from WMW) what an 'Orphan' webpage is.

Suppose you decide to change the name of a webpage: from keyword.htm to better_keyword.htm
I have made the change and updated the links in the site. BUT, I have left the old page there for a few months because a bunch of SEs will have a link to it.

Does this mean my site will get penalised for having orphaned pages?

Kapow, this is all theory in the first place. The "orphaned pages as cause for penalty" was a theory discussed here in respect to Google.
In your case I think the real problem could be that you now have two identical pages under different names. I believe in Google this might cause problems.

Links in SEs ? well if you are talking about directories, you should consider not changing the url of the page, cause the hassle youŽd have changing the directory links would be much worse than a possible gain from changing the page url.
I was under the assumption anyway that keywords are advantagous merely/only in the domain part of the path.
