From: [pcmag.co.uk...]

The Windows XP Service Pack 2 (SP2) will finally be released in August, Microsoft has confirmed.

Let's hope it's not RC 2. It caused a TON of problems for me.

Sounds like SP2 caused some trouble with Longhorn development. From [insight.zdnet.co.uk...] :

Microsoft has been persistently vague on when the various server and desktop versions of Longhorn will ship, with the year 2007 the most precise estimate so far. Speaking at the conference earlier this week, Paul Flessner, senior vice president of Microsoft's Server Platform Division, also refused to be drawn on an exact release date.

Steve Ballmer confirmed earlier rumours that the delays to the release of the latest update to Windows XP, Service Pack 2 (SP2), had an impact on the schedule for Longhorn, conceding that, "SP2 didn't help the Longhorn schedule," he said.

also...

Ballmer said Longhorn represents a large "step function" in invention which would be disruptive for companies and partners, but that periods of intense innovation, followed by incremental improvements, were the nature of the software industry.

And my favorite...

He admitted that the company has work to do when it comes to its product road map. "We are not that good at scheduling. We are not as bad as some but we are not as good as others should be."

Looks like SP2 for XP is just practice for Longhorn which will be the REAL headache. Maybe they will call it Windows PIA (for pain in the you-know-where)

Here's a nice popup error message I got:

Windows Service Pack 2 has detected that one or more protected files on your computer have been modified. The Service Pack contains updated versions of those files, which work to provide a stable environment for your program.s

If you click Yes, the updated versions will overwrite the current files and you might lose certain customizations created by third-party programs, especially those that affect the graphic displayed when your computer starts up.
If you click No, the computer might fail or stop responding.

Do you want to overwrite the files?

I think I'll wait before updating until I hear some positive results!

Man, I hate it when M$ does anything anymore. Some days I wish they'd just count their loot and pack it in.

If what I've read in the few threads around here is indicative, SP2 is gonna be nightmare central. And all M$ support is going to say is "Your problem is being caused by a product from an outside vendor. You're on your own."

IBM, which is not only a big technology company but a big user of technology, is warning its 400,000 PC-using employees not to install SP2 until it's fixed some of the apps it uses to ensure compatibility...

It makes me wish I believed in Santa Claus, I'd ask for a nice red hat for Christmas.
