Basically, just wondering if you are using dialup or not while working on the web.

1.5 M DSL

I know lots of folks still using dialup though...(users, not developers)

I've been using dialup until just the past month or so -- I develop a small hobby site.

Another vote for (A)DSL

Apparently the broadband/dial-up split is now 27%/73% in the UK according to the BBC [news.bbc.co.uk], although I'm not sure if this includes business DSL connections as well.

My guess is that broad/dial split is 90%/10% on WebmasterWorld.. Just wondering if you guys could help confirm.

Was dsl a few years ago (of an early variety - it was slow, hardly better than dial-up), Now I've had cable for several years, huge difference.

DSL for however long it's been available, but still keep AOL around for backup and checking what sites look like and how they behave.

While working in my home office I am on cable modem (Earthlink, using Roadrunner--Time-Warner cable).

While traveling, I use dial up. In most motels with a switchboard the fasted connection is about 28K and average transfer rate less than 20K, regardless of type of modem.

Many users of my web site are in a similar situation--broadband in the office, super-slow on the road. (based on conversations and email).

I'll contribute to your 10% WebmasterWorld split ;)

but only because I've got no choice, back of beyond you see.. They're promising great things for rural Scotland before the end of the year and they better keep their promise..

If I can I go into our office and use their DSL.. grrr it just makes me feel worse when I get home though :).

I think even 90% is a low estimate for members here - I find it impossible to do any serious work if I've only got a dialup connection. I use 1.5Mbs ADSL here, and I couldn't live without it. I wouldn't go and live anywhere where high-speed internet (DSL, cable, whatever) isn't available at a reasonable price.

Of course, for the general public, things are a bit different.

I'm on broadband at my employers office, and dialup at home. There isn't anything but dialup available where I live.

Dialup at home, which is about 75% of my webwork.

ADSL at work, for the other 25%.

ADSL is available at home, but it's still cheaper on dialup for me... for now.

I think 90% is a high estimate. Looks more like 70% broad, 30% dial.

ADSL here, though I keep a dialup account active for roadwork, and occassionally to check download speeds. I work with a fair number of US rural residents that only have crappy dialup available (with blazing speeds of as much as as 18k on a good day in some cases).

I'm in the same boat as SuzyUK. The back of beyond. Except I'm in at the other end of our island, Cornwall.

No chance of cable. Satelite too expensive. And highly unlikely our exchange will get updated to broadband.

But I can live with that because of the scenery. :)

Dial-up.

But then I am in a valley, on an island.

Life style choices ...

iamlost,

No, you are not lost. You have found the place to be ;-)

Maybe you should change your signon name to iamnotlost.

Dialup. I develop on dialup because I'm 40 miles from the nearest DSL or cable modem hub, there are only 40 families in this little town, and 250 of us (!) would have to pony up $2500-$3000 each to get QWest to even THINK about running DSL up here.

Needless to say, not only are there not 250 of us, even if there were, most of those folks would have no interest in spending that sort of money for DSL....

I COULD have satband, except I really can't afford it. Yet.

I've been on DSL for about a year; Netzero dialup before that.

Satellite... Way out in the country. But LMDS and MMDS wireless microwave broadband services are coming soon. Should be faster, cheaper, and not as subject to weather disruptions. For now, stuck at 384 - 768kbps with 480mS latency.
