Template definition

Can anyone tell me exactly what a web page template is? I'm thinking that it is a page that someone just adds their own text, ie: fills in the blanks. My wife has many different web page layouts with graphics and other items. Would we not need to have a program for others to use to input the different variables in the spaces indicated. Or would we just let the visiters downlowd these templates and use their own page editors to fill in the text as needed.

You are correct in your assumption, that it's basically fill-in-the-blank. However, many people won't know HTML, have dreamweaver/frontpage, etc. So some sites offer template customization for a fee.

However, I think that having your own WYSIWYG editor for the templates (especially if they're paid templates) would be a nice thing for non-web-savvy businesses.
