We're also excited about using our categorization technology to apply to other areas beyond news, such as local web search.

Could next generation search engines use something like this AI technology?

Sure, auto categorization is 'next generation' but, without some profiling data, auto categorizing 'saturn' as a car when the searcher meant the planet / wouldn't be great for usability ;)

What engines seem to be moving towards is more like 'opt in' profiling, and then using those profiles to shift the results over time in some fashion. To begin with, you will still need to figure out what the root result set will be like - and then, tailor the experience according to the feedback data, clickstream, cookie, etc.
