I would like to use the yahoo online indicator on my website ( showing when members are online ). I found the following code at [messenger.yahoo.com...] - <a href="http://edit.yahoo.com/config/send_webmesg?.target=YahooUser25&.src=pg">
<img border=0 src="http://opi.yahoo.com/online?u=YahooUser25&m=g&t=2"></a>

However, i would like to use custom graphics for the online indicator.

Does anyone know how to do this?

You could write a script that will download the graphics off yahoo server, then you check first few bits on the image. Before hand you can check them manually and see wich ones correspond to online or offline. Then you can display whatever you want yourself.

I would not have a clue on how to do that.

Surely that is a simple way to do this?

Try to search for "Online Status Indicator". There is a chain of servers that offers online indicator with custom icon, but they aren't the most reliable servers. They get lots of traffic and lots of them go offline for a long period of time. It's ok to use them for one or two indicators. If you are thinking of having a whole list of users with such indicator - I advise you not to use that service.
