I have been asked to develop a replacement website for someone which is almost complete. The existing website/webmaster has the domain name registered until 2006. He is aware that I am making the new site and said he will help in any was possible. He currently hosts the site on his providers webspace and I now need to transfer the domain to my webspace. I will be speaking to him this coming weekend.
My questions..
a) Am I right in thinking I need him to transfer his DNS to my webspace?
b) What should he ask his ISP to do regarding the domain transfer? (His website knowledge is rather limited)
c)Any other things I need to ask/do regarding hosting transfer/e-mail accounts etc?
Many Thanks
Hosting Transfer-
(Changing website hosts) He simply needs to change the DNS entry to the one YOUR host gives you. After it propagates (up to 48 hours) then your new site will be active.
Domain Transfer-
This is where he would transfer actual ownership of the domain name itself to you. Typically, you would go to your registrar and request a transfer. They would send a message to him (or the owner) asking if its ok. He notifys them that it is ok. And the domain is transferred.
Even easier would be if he simply went into HIS registrar and changed all the info to YOUR info. You could then leave the domain with that registrar, and/or transfer it later at your leisure.
