Busiest Sites Ever in One Day

Who has the most visitors in one day on the web?

I am seeking information on which sites can claim the record for the most hits for one day on the internet?

Can anyone post some information regarding this here on this thread?

Is it a Lingerie thing, a news story that created a hype... I would like to know who has the record for the most unique visitors per day?

Serious responses only if possible. (As expected here on W.W.)

Thanks

I'd imagine it's Google - due to folks searching for the keyword that caused the one day spike.

Yeah - it would be interesting to see CNN's server stats on 9/11.

Wasn't there an incident with a lingerie company doing a live broadcast via the web of the show and it crashing all their servers? Don't know how many hits it was, but it made the news.

I remember that no major site was working on 9/11. I think G or CNN on 9/11 was the most visited site ever on one day.

From the google special zeitgeist page for 9/11:

At 6:51 a.m. on Tuesday, more than 6,200 queries for "cnn" were conducted on Google. Between 6:26 a.m. and 7:06 a.m., the number of searches for "cnn" averaged approximately 6,000 queries per minute

It still amazes me that so many people use the google search bar instead of the address bar. I see people doing it all the time at work. You tell them to go to www.cnn.com and they go to google and type in www.cnn.com.

I would have to guess CNN or Google on 9/11

But who can claim the actual top spots say 1-10, does anyone have this information?

If you put any faith in Alexa's info, you could go with their top 10 and assume they had 1 day max-outs?

Guinness used to keep some records of this sort, as noted in the following blurb:

In September, the Guinness Book of World Records recognized the official Web site of the France 98 World Cup [http://www.france98.com/] as the new record holder in four Internet categories: the most visited site during a specific block of time, site registering the most hits in one day (73 million on June 30, 1998), site registering the most hits in one hour and site registering the most hits in one minute.

A bit dated (December 1998!) but it does suggest a couple of directions to look --Guinness.... and sites concerning sporting events of international interest.

(Not saying these will necessarily top the 9/11 suggestions. . .but they likely account for several of your "top ten".)

Hmmmm

Anyone have the new Guiness Book? May have to go over to the River/jungle .com site to get one.

I am surprised no one website has this tabulated? May be a good idea for an SEO site.

Hint Hint!

Still trying to find an official reference though, like some sort of online site that maybe does exist with this information...

official reference <> online site

...but you know that - there can only ever be approximations/guesses/lies..er, statistics culled by some third party.

Yes I understand this but you would think there is something out there?

I am surpised with all of us here that there is no decent source for this information?
