I have a DSL right now and all of a sudden I am having problems getting on any sites where I have to login. Internet Explorer is my web browser. If I try to get on something like aol, overture, or anything where I sign in, "page not found comes up". Sometimes right after that a site called ExactaSeek comes up or Bestoftheweb. I asked my Internet provider if it had something to do with the problem. He said no and suggested to go to Tools, Internet Options, Programs, Reset Web Settings. I tried doing this but it didnt work. He also said I might have to reinstall IE. I believe there is an easier way to fix this problem though.

I need to get on these sites, can anyone help?

Thanks,
Jeremy

If you're being redirected to another webpage, you've probably been infected by "Adware". Try a program like Ad-Aware to remove it.

Tried disabling your firewall or firewall software? Tried another browser? Is it only https logins or cookie/db logins too?

Why don't you try using another browser? That will help narrow down the problem.

If you don't have another browser, you can try FireFox. (It's awsesome ;) )
You can get it here: [mozilla.org...]

I tried AOL lan connection too and I still had the same problem. Would AOL be considered as another browser. I believe (although I am not sure and I may be willing to use Netscape), that no matter what browser I use, I will still have the same problem.

Thanks for your help everyone!

I had a similar problem to what you are experiencing, but it was internet-optimizer that I was getting forwarded to.

It became apparent that it was adware and I found these entries in the 'Add/Remove Programs' control panel.

1) Open the Control Panel and choose Add/Remove Programs.
2) Look for Active Alert and Internet Optimizer. If these entries are there, select Change Remove for each one in turn. Follow the steps to remove the program.

This got rid of my problem, perhaps having a look in your ‘Add/Remove Programs’ and sees if you can locate any of the offending programs and try removing them.

I have tried everything..even reinstalled Internet Explorer...I guess my next step is to do a system restore...I just want it gone, so I am at my last option.

Thanks everyone for giving it a shot

Also try "spybot search and destroy" for parasiteware detection.

I'd imagine you're getting fairly desperate for a solution so I'll offer this. It would be a real long shot but...
One of the computers in our office refused to allow logging in to the admin panel of a script we use frequently. We had pulled it out of the back room and it was running an early copy of Win98. After trying a lots of the usual possibilities the problem was finally solved when we went to the Microsoft site and updated Win98.
Whatever you try - best of luck.

I fixed my problem by doing a system restore. I chose to restore my computer to what the settings were in January. For anyone who doesn't know you can pick what the settings were for anytime period within the past so many months. To my surprise the files were all current. Of course everything else was three months old. Even though I have some work to do to catch up to the present time, I'm glad it is working again.

Thanks everyone

I am experiencing the exact same problem. Was a fix ever found? I can't get to anything that requires a login, i.e. internet banking, insurance company, hotmail, etc. I run a program that detects any adware so I know it isn't that. It does not direct me to a new page either.

I haven't heard that adware blocks secure sites, but I do know that a misconfigured firewall or router would. Are you running a home network or a software firewall which might be blocking port 443?

I think I found something else too....there is a program called bridge.dll that appears in my program list that I am not able to remove. I see that it has something to do with running Adaware 6. I removed the bridge file and kept getting an error. I fixed that but I have been having pop-ups ever since and I can't remember how I fixed it. I also had Norton installed and it seems to have deleted half the program.

I had trouble logging into secure sites a while back... After many headaches trying to figure out the problem, all I needed to do was uninstall my Norton Antivirus and reinstall. I had tried turning the antivirus off and assumed that it wasn't the problem when I still couldn't log into the sites, but I finally decided to unistall anyway. Glad I did!

I'm going to try and reinstall Norton and see if that works. Thanks for the idea.
