Best when viewed with . . .

Isn't it time for what goes around to come around?

A few years ago, as Netscape 4 languished, then Netscape 6 disappointed, it was common to see sites with, "Best when viewed in Microsoft Internet Explorer."

Isn't it time for the screw to turn? Shouldn't webmasters be including, "Best when viewed in Mozilla/Firefox/Opera" on their pages?

They already have the "validated" buttons on websites. Sooner or later all the browsers will catch up, and smarten up and use what w3 proposes.

No. Should highways post signs that read "Best when driven in Fords?" or how about about pools that have signs that read "Best when wearing Speedo"?

webmasters should be writing code so it works on all browsers, as best as possible. Let the user decide what to use.

Aye that. When I stumbled my way to that particular conclusion, I was COMPLETELY embarrassed about what I'd been doing to those folks who didn't for whatever reason use IE of any flavor.

And now I myself don't use IE.... what goes around comes around.... *laughing*

[Um. But as the owner of a Ford F250 Diesel even if it DOES have 220,000 original miles on it, y'know I really DO think the highway ought to be labeled.... (eh, that's a joke, btw....)]

"best when viewed with" = "I didn't build my site for more than one browser"

How bout "Best Viewed by buttons, eh?

Best viewed by people who can view it.

Ooh, I think I'll put that on my site. Sound stupid? So does Best Viewed With Netscape 4.0 (or some other browser) and especially "made with a mac" who the crap cares if you used a macintosh to make a page. Woopty doo, I don't say "made with a computer" on my site, do I now.

Heres something which really needs the 'best viewed with' sign:
3d Movies. (Spykids :))

Best viewed with 3d glasses.

I also actually tried that on the Spykids website, I put my 3d glasses on when entering the site and it worked great for some scenes!

So I'd say if you really really really want to put a "Best viewed with" sign, make a 3d website with that 3d effect in Flash and put "Best Viewed with 3d Glasses".

"Best viewed with" = I don't understand how the web works.

If you've got the slightest interest in standards, then you know about device independence and forward compatibility. That means that your site should be accessible on a cellphone screen, in Netscape 1, or, in 10 years time, on whatever browser or technology that exists then. It may not look the same, but that's a different matter.

If you're designing your site to fit one browser, even if it's Opera or Firefox, then you're failing in the same way as those who only support particular versions of IE.

I can understand why a webmaster may want to promote a particular set of browsers, especially those that better supports the W3C recommendations then IE. But the "Best Viewed by" tag line is not the best way to go and carries a lot of undesirable baggage. I would actually suggest a "recommended" or similar solution. If you sell ad space, then you might want to create an alternative browser PSA as part of the ad rotation.

Y'know, I tend to think now that "Best Viewed With...." ONLY belongs as used in the following statement:

"Best viewed with ANY browser on ANY platform!" That would pretty much cover it.... assuming of course that your pages ARE that accessible. I'm pointing myself as surely in that direction as I can - though I doubt I'd use that statement in any case....
