Hi

2 days ago my adsl stopped working with the no dial tone signal, having checked with my ISP, they said you have to contact the line operator, they've done a check on the line today and they said it's ok! but luckily the test somehow made the adsl work again :), but since then i have a weired modem noise on my line which is impossible to make calls on. I was wondering if anyone possibly can help me with this as im absolutely lost whats going on.

P.S. Done virus checks nothing came up, had a new soundcard installed few days back b4 the error i even removed that to make sure its nothing to do with that but still the noise is there. Also i tried all sorts of configurations and somehow the error comes from the modem side!. I am in UK and also im using Virgin ISP.

many thanks

I'm not a tech, but if you weren't getting a dial tone, or if you were getting strange noises, on a POTS line, I think all you can do is check the small section of line that's under your control, and if that doesn't clear it up, get them to fix it.

hi

thanks 4 the reply. I did try all combinations possible, they said the line is fine and it's something to do with your kit, and if we send an engineer over and detect that its your fault u getting charged £60! I only get the noise when i connect the modem, phone alone is ok, so i presume its something on my PC!

It could have something to do with the filter. I dunno.

Sorry, if that didn't help, but you are aware that the filter belongs on the phone side of the splitter? There shouldn't be any noise getting past the filter to the phone regardless of what you have on the computer. That's all I know.

Have you tried a new modem, if the line work fine with the modem unplugged then it's pretty safe to say the line is ok, you say you have tried a new filter, which is used to filter out the hissing noise, If you do call out BT they will dissconect all your equipment and demonstate that things are ok there and walk away, they will bill if the fault is not on the bt network. You also need a filter on every phone not just the one where the modem is.
