4 or 5 years ago, if I was asked this question, I would say there is a good chance of making decent revenue. Unfortunately in 2004, the only advertising that pays money to make it worth your while developing and maintaining the site is very targetted to specific industries.
For months now they're nearly all "dmoz knock offs" who's sole reason for being is to come up on any word or phrase searched for and then wait for you to click on the "adwords" all along the top ..
That's how to make money ....and with your profits you can buy shares in the "IPO" from "g" when it gets here ...
Your subject has to be "ad friendly", meaning that a site on overthrowing the government isn't going find many relevent ads anywhere..BUT about cooking, traveling, dating, etc... is going to have tons of great advertisiers wants some space on your site.
The best way nowadays to make a good content site is to find niche. That is, not a site on travel, but a site on packing light, or traveling in sri lanka, or getting cheap airline tickets etc.. etc..
The are millions of "niches" which are dying to be exploited, too small for the "big boys" to deal with, but GREAT for a group of one or two to make a living off of.
Webmasters (like myself) find niches all the time by just keeping out eyes open, but NEVER reveal them to other webmasters. Personally I have about 10 "niches" im currently thinking about, I found them all just by accident, I was searching for X and realized there was no site about X, or no GREAT site about X, only geocities sites.
But PLEASE remember something, to make money from your site, it has to be GREAT... Write an article a day for 3 years and you will have a GREAT site... thats 1000 articles... THATS a content site large enough to make a living off of.
And you have to smother your niche with content, from ever perspective... low calorie cooking, high caloriecooking, quick cooking, great cooking, cake cooking, stove cooking, bacon cooking, cooking jokes, cooking tools, cooking recipe reviews, cooking guides, cooking gear reviews, cooking forums... you get the idea.
Making a great site isnt "hard", it takes skill, time, dedication.... but all you need is "effort". Effort to learn the skills, effort to take the time, effort to be in it for the long haul... ANYONE CAN do it, but only those who put in the effort DO "DO IT".
