how does that custom image appear in the bookmark

I have bookmarked the webmasterworld index page (webmasterworld.com)Using IE.
all the other links have a webpage shown next to them but in this case there is a logo, somthign i cant make out. anyway question is how do i do that? can any gif file be used for this purpose. bookmarking any page on this site also results in same thing.

Do a search in google for "favicon"

Incredibly easy to make. I am really surprised everyone doen't have one.

Basically, you create a 16x16 image, save it to your root directory as favicon.ico. You need a graphics program that supports .ico to create one, but there are dozens out there for free. I used IrfanView to do mine. That's all there is to it.

IrfanView is a great tool to use for all quick editing needs, not just the creation of favicons.

I have shared hosting on my server, so I have my root, but I can't access the server root. Can I put it in my root and have it work?

You can add this to the head section of each page:

<link rel="SHORTCUT ICON" href="[your path to favicon.ico here]">
