There are other ways to make money, but the following thread can give you some ideas about affiliate advertising:

I won't go into financial details, but I make a great deal of money from my sites. I don't sell a product though, I wrote web based applications which people use.

They pay a subscription. Think "Turbo Tax for the web". No inventory, no shipping, no disks, very little advertising, but a HE** of a LOT OF WORK.

I wrote code for 2 years before it was ready, and I'm constantly updating and servicing customers.

There is no free lunch and no fast and easy path. Throwing money at an idea won't make the idea any better. Be sure you know what you're investing in.

Currently I dont make any money yet, but web development mentor (wont mention the site) runs a home grown travel company with 4 other guys.

These guys started with a one room apartment and 4 laptops, 3 years ago, and now they run the company from 4 different site around the world, offering different types of travel sites and information, the site is around 60,000 on alexa.com and was just mentioned in USA today last week.

So with time and dedication you can make a great living... but you have to love your subject, and be willing to put every cent in it.
