Client Can Ping, E-Mail but no Websites

I have a client who can see my websites most of the time.

Right now, however, he can't connect to *any* webpages on my server.

He can get email from my server, he can ping my IP without incident.

He is on DSL, and rebooted his modem. He can reach other web pages without problem. I am definitely up without incident.

I don't have filters for IP banning that would cause his IP to be blocked.

What else could be going on? No one else reported not being able to connect.

Some possibles to eliminate:

1. You mention client can ping your IP - can client ping both IP address and domain name? If IP only may want to try different DNS server.
   
2. if client can ping both IP address and domain name and is running IE there may be corrupt IE files. If newer IE use the "repair browser" option in Add/Remove Programs. If older IE: Start-Settings-Control Panel-Add/Remove Programs: double-click "Internet Explorer": select "Repair Browser": click "Ok": reboot.
   
3. is client using a firewall? If so check settings.
   
4. is client using AOL browser? some dsl routers and some AOL browser versions seem to have probs (but I wouldn't expect it only with one site).
   
5. if client has MTU (Maximum Transmission Unit) settings too high it may cause intermittant problems (but I wouldn't expect it only with one site).
   

Let us know when/what solution finally is.

Something similar happened to me a while ago.

I was on DSL running behind a linksys BEFSR41 router. One day, all of a sudden I could not get on "Some sites". I could go on ebay, yahoo...etc, but I could not go on hotmail, msn, amazon...etc. There was nothing I could do. I could ping everyone, including the sites that I could get on, I just couldn't load about 50% of the sites on the internet.

Turned out that my ISP has changed the DNS IP. For some reasons, my linksys router did not want to release the old DNS. I did everything I could think of: refresh the DNS list, reset it, left it unpowered, reinstall new firmware, even hit it a couple times. Finally I just bought a new router and everything was fixed.

I have heard the same has happened to some older Planet and netgear routers.

On the client machine or my server?

He may be running Norton Internet Security, which is always troublesome, and is very often the blame in this kind of situation.

Other ideas: he should also clear his cache and, if he doesn't have a fixed IP address, should restart his internet connection to get a new IP address from his ISP (in case your security setup is inadvertantly blocking him). Also, think about adware or spyware, dodgy DNS in your client's DNS cache (if he's on a company network, he should contact the sysadmin), or a broken browser.

I would think he meant on the client's machine. Can you have him do a tracert on the websites in question?

Turns out it was his Zone Alarm blocking the DNS from translating!

I created a default page with the IP address and he was able to see that. So we played around for a while and he got a Zone Alarm popup for something.

Once we disabled zone alarm all was fine. He's running behind a firewall/router anyway.

sorry yes, the client side.
rebuilding the winsock files is a good idea too. depending on your OS there are different methods. If you still have the problem after removing firewall sw, sticky email me for a fix to the winsock issue.
