can you put a price tag on starting your own search engine?

Can you tell us what kind of search engine? A Google killer or just a small engine covering a special niche?

The latter you can start on your own with some simple freeware scripts whereas a Google killer engine would require several man-years of development.

This is a hard task, I'd assume. If you want to limit the pages in your search engine to sports info, how do you intend to do this? Are you working with an editor whose task is to look for good sports sites and pages to be included? Or do you intend to use a program? The latter is IMHO very difficult.

What size (in terms of pages) do you think you're engine would grow to?

At a rough guess, and covering only the English language market, you would be looking at a cost of about US$15 Million as rights deals become important at this level. On a smaller scale, you could be looking at about $200,000 or so for the first year to do it on a smaller scale. On a hobbyist scale, it would only involve your time and the hosting and advertising expenses.
