We have a fairly successful website going on, and we recently noticed that a domain name has become available which is shorter, topical, and more memorable than the one we're using.
What are the advantages/disadvamtages of bringing on a second domain as an alias? Do the search engines frown on that? Is it a good idea?

If the domain name is short, memorable, and appropriate, you should probably grab it. You can then choose whether to develop it separately (with different content) or do a 301 redirect to your primary site. If your primary site isn't far along with links & rankings, you might even consider redirecting it to the new domain. You'd set yourself back for now, but it might work better in the long run for branding and type-ins.
