Do you work one subject or many?

I currently run 1 site concerning a topic that I love. I'm hoping to soon expand this into 2-3 sites on the single topic.

However, this topic is not very popular (only 1,500 searches on this keyword per month).

Now, I'm deciding if I want to expand into related topics, still not SUPER popular, (2,000-3,000 searches per month) OR expand into completely unrelated but far more profitable topics, such as ipods, dvd copying, cheap tickets, etc... etc...

How many subjects do you work on?

OMG! I have about three MAJOR projects in the fire, plus maintenance on a bunch of other sites, plus development on three more going during my "spare" moments.

I don't sleep anymore.

"I don't sleep anymore."
Either does a British buddy of mine. He stays up till 3:00 AM on WEEKDAYS, where he has to get ready for school at 7:00 AM and THEN WATCHES A DVD! I find it outrageous.

I think you should probably make different sites on more popular topics. Alot of people say that you shouldn't make sites on overdone topics, but even though there's big sites sucking up alot of traffic, there's still tons of traffic left to tap into.

I have currently 15 personal sites (excluding customers sites) covering aspects of just 3 different topics. I have tried to cover other topics in the past but given up. In order to run a successful site, you need to be interested in the subject. Sure you could go for some "in thing" for your site. If you are not interested in researching and developing that topic, the site will flounder. If you are dedicated and passionet about the topic then the site will reflect that. Even if the topic is a bit of a niche. Better to be a big fish in a small pond than a small fish in a big pond.

Having said all that: I do agree with Llama. There is always room for more fish. Even if the topic is done to death, you may find a fresh take on the subject.

I like video games, and that's pretty much done to death. But I dislike taking on other topics.
