On my hobby site, I have an email newsletter that has been getting some sign-ups. I am doing double opt-in and I am running into problems. Only about half the people who single opt-in go onto double opt-in.

Any suggestions on how to improve my double opt-in rate?

you could spend some time on the opt-in confirmation email. Instead of just "click here to confirm your subscription", spell out the befefits of getting your newsletter.

Also thank them for signing up and explain the need for the conformation both in the conf email and on your site. Make sure that they know it's comming and that it's required to receive the newsletter.

maybe a lot of those sign ups are cranks and jokes, I have seen it happen.

That happens quite a bit denisdekat. Sadly for most the internet is still a game they play.

Good suggestions on doing a email that better explains things or that is more a postive upbeat email.

Are you sure you're not getting snagged by spam filters?

On one of my humor sites, we offer the first half of a joke in the email and they get the second half of the joke when they confirm their registration.

Works for me ... so far.

Here's what I have for comparison. I don't know if it's a good result or just so-so, but here goes:
Over a period of time I had 2069 view the add-remove page where they could type in their e-mail adderss.
of that 736 viewed the added page which means they did the first op-in
48 viewed the removed page which means they opted out
490 viewed the confirmed page which means they completed the double opt-in
