I have never used broadband before and need to connect.

There is one computer that has the cable modem installed etc and broadband is working fine on that machine. This machine runs windows Xp pro.

I now need my laptop to share this broadband connection. I have attached a pci router to the cable modem and linked a cable between the XP machine and my laptop which runs Windows 98 but nothing happens.

Do I actually have to create a network before the laptop can use the broadband connection or is there something in the laptop (windows 98) that I have to configure?

Thanks in advance for any help.

In Win98 you'll need to go to network neighbourhood to set the IP's. The connecting IP, DNS IP, & the gateway, if you both want to share files then rename both the comps under the same workgroup.
Hope that helps, check the xp pro pc to see the network ip settings, restart & you're there.

Thanks operafan. Forgive my ignorance in this but when I go to network neighborhood in win 98 where and how do I set the IP's there.

Also where can I see the IP address on the XP machine?

Thanks

BTW only want to share the broadband connection not share files so no need to rename the comps.

Will a firewall create a problem with all this?

First would be to jot down the IP's from the xp mach.
At the clock on the bottom right, double click on the double computer icon & a box will pop out to tell you the connection speed, then click on the Properties box.
Another box will pop up, click on the Internet Protocols (TCP/IP) & click on Properties.
After that another box will pop up with the general tab, there lies all the IP's details for you to set exactly as the 98 mach.
In win 98 you'll also have to do the same,, right click on your Network Neighbourhood icon & go to properties, TCP/IP is the one that you should set all the IP's into. & then reboot.

Firewall question, are you talking about software or hardware? Forgot to mention, if the broadband is on a LAN or via single IP's bcoz the IP on the XP mach is cant be used on the same mach as yours, there'll be conflict( it's either 1 person to use the same IP at the same time ). I presume your not on LAN,otherwise the Net Admin can help.. I'm no admin though..see if that person has additional IP to allocate to you for surfing..?

a hardware router will solve all these problems
hook up your broadband modem to the router and then both computers to the router.
the modem thinks that the router is the computer and gives it the IP numnber.
set both machines to get their IPs automatically and you are set.
tell both machines that your internet connection is through a LAN in your internet options.

luck,
robert

Robert - I think that is what I finally did. A router that runs the cable to an USB ethernet 10/100 ethernet adapter into my laptop.

Now what is really weird here is if I remove the USB connection from the laptop, start up the computer wait till Win 98 has fully loaded and then insert the USB connection I can connect on broadband no probs.

BUT if I leave the USB cable connected and restart the computer Windows 98 will not start. It instead gives me the error message: While initializing device CONFIGMG Windows protection error. You need to restart your computer.

I did a search on G for this error and the microsoft response seems to have an answer but am rather concerned about messing with the BIOS APM

I had something similar with my router
did you try this simple move

assure that all machines, modem and router are connected
then power off everything cable modem, router, both machines and then re power it should work (hopefully!)

but remember that you do not have a static IP
therefore anytime you unplug your laptop you need to restablish that link by powering down and back

Thanks Henry0 - if I reboot with the usb ethernet adapter connected then I get the CONFIGMG error and the computer simply does not start. If I take the usb adapter out I reboot as I normally do. All very strange.

Hello visit-Thailand

I guess your router came with a simple manual and a CD

did you look at the setup options

do you have a hardware firewall or are you using a cable firewall (from your broadband ISP) or using XP firewall too.
or even on the top of all are you using the AV firewall for example I use PC Cillin and they have a firewall

well in that case too much is really too much
out of experiment kill all firewall do not use your email disable your AV and try the same reboot
what happens then?

if things are looking better I will re enable the cable-firewall and possibly the router firewall
but I do not use XP firewall

let's see?

good luck

BTW
did you placew a call to the ISP
