How can one go about using multiple servers for a single domain? Is it possible to spread the same domain and same content across two separate shared hosting accounts?

With a dedicated IP on each you can do it with DNS.

It is called round robin, here is how it works:

Your DNS is setup with two 'A' records for www. domain.com

Each time a DNS lookup occurs it alternates the returned IP addess.

Of course, each site would need to have exactly mirrored content and by doing this at the DNS level you wouldnt get stung with a duplicate content penalty.
