What is your typical day as a webmaster?

As we are going through a site redesign, this morning was spent drawing up a list of pros and cons from my pile of design proposals to submit to the committee charged with discussing the process. Then I updated a resources section in Dreamweaver (we have a static site), and archived all our 2000-2002 press releases (ensuring all the links to them were updated). Now I'm working on our email strategy, working out what needs to be included.

Other days include rewriting content so that it is more layered and Google-friendly (this is ongoing and part of our redesign process), commissioning new content, supervising other staff in web updates, scripting PHP and/or PERL elements (eg online searchable photo database), manipulating photos for the web and researching new hosting companies.

My day tends to run from 9 until 6 (it could easily run from 8 till 8 but I have made a concerted effort to have a non-work life too!). At luch time I try to go out for a walk, exploring my neighbourhood (in London), running errands or catching up on shopping.

Everyday is different because there are so many things to do!

What is your daily routine then?

Maynard.

Daily routine ... what's that?

You got it right, there is just so much to do that every day is different. Usually I come in and check emails first, check the news, do any orders that can be done, make up a couple of pages, check stats, write more emails, tweak pages ... more random stuff.

The more sites you are running the more hectic it gets, especially if they sell tangible products that need to be stocked, packed, labelled and shipped. You need to be reasonably organized to do all the things that webmasters need to do, but still loads of people see it as a dossy job.

My daily routine goes from making about 30 pages each day for my targeted keywords.

Then from there it moves onto optimizing images and thumbnailing them using macros. Then it's onto Photoshop for design work for my clients.

I fall out of bed around 9:30 or so, check email, make coffee. I'll read the paper online. By 11 I'm thinking about a shower.

I'll start work around noon, modify some pages, make a few sales calls, prepare my deposits for the day.

By 3 I take a break.

By 6 I'm hungry so I'll eat something.

Watch a little TV, read the mail, play with the kids.

By 10 I'm in bed.

On weekends I do laundry.
