Need to register sub-level domains?

I have a client who I am designing a site for and we are considering the domain name for the site. They are a band dept. within a school of music and can't register their own .edu domain since the main school already has the 1 .edu domain allowed. So we're thinking of something like bands.schoolname.edu Would we need to register that domain or is it simply a matter of the server administrator configuring the DNS to recognize that domain? I'm new to sublevel domains so any advice would be appreciated.

You can't register subdomains -- you're correct that it's a server configuration thing. Contact the admin to ask about setting up the subdomain for you.

If you want to use yourname.school.edu you will need the school's permission of course. It will have to be implemented by the hosting company that school.edu is using. It may be available by just clicking a button. On my server I can add whatever subdomains I want at any time. It is already built in to my control panel.
By the way, all it does is create a sub-directory under your root and point the subdomain to it;

subdomain.yourschool.edu
points to

yourschool.edu/subdomain
