A particular area of my website gets 12 000 regulaar visitors a day. This is costing me money for the extra bandwidth, so I would be interested if any of you had ideas about advertising that wouldn't be to the detriment of my site - no xcam ads etc.

Try Google Adsense (forum 89) or Advertising Sales and Affiliate Programs (forum 20)

I recommend using Google Adsense. It is really easy to set up and pays well.

A lot depends on the topic of the site/pages. I'll go along with Google Adsense being a great starting point. You'll be able to judge fairly quickly how profitable it is.

If you can sell ads to individual advertisers who are highly interested in your topic, you might do better. It's also possible that very targeted affiliate ads could outperform Adsense, too. For quick setup and reasonable payout under most conditions, though, Adsense is hard to beat.

The newfound popularity arose because a well known website picked up a game I made and featured it prominently on their website. Others followed suit, and I want some way to recoup the bandwidth costs. But strictly, my site would count as a personal site and so is not allowed under the adsense policy, though it doesn't hurt to try.

If it's abouta game you made, are you selling the game you made on that site?

Not terribly, you could sell it to a company. If your game is that popular w/o you paying for advertising, then it has gone "viral", meaning people pass the link on and on to friends. Companies dream of that happening to something they create and some will buy something if it has shown it will do that.

It may be too late now, but try putting an affiliate ad on the Game Over page. I am assuming that it has one of those. Put a line saying, "If you liked this game, help support it by visiting our sponsor"

The game "Elf Bowling" and it's many versions are an example of something like this, except the ad on the Game Over page is for the ad company that created it. I think "Elf Bowling" is the ultimate example of a game going viral.

I have been toying with the idea of trying to create a holiday game to send to our customers next Xmas with the hopes that it would go viral and generate free advertising. You've done it w/o even thinking about it.
