Symbols in domain name

I found a domain name today with an '@' symbol in the name.

It looks more like an e-mail address except for the www. and the .com before and after. I thought this was very strange, and now I am wondering if it was a vanity domain, or a real one.

The thing that concerns me is that so many people I deal with get domain names and e-mail addresses confused (not computer people. ;o) ) and I can see this as getting VERY confusing to them.

Or on the other hand it could really make things simple for those of the analog persuasion. :o)

it's a username/password for HTTP autentication in the address, more than likely. full syntax looks like this:

for u/p:

http://jake:[e-mail]

u only:

http://[e-mail]

Perfectly legal. :)

actually it's more like "[e-mail]" which is why it struck me as odd.

I use the syntax that you refer to often, but I've never seen it the way that this URL shows.

Well, it could be:

a) Someone who doesn't know how to use the Internet properly. A very good friend of mine who drives limos for a living puts [e-mail] on his business cards because he doesn't know the difference between the WWW and email, and thinks www has to go in front of everything "Internet" :)

b) Maybe www.jake is the actual username.

I'd guess the former, if I had to bet on it.

That's what I thought too, but the link actually works as written. Maybe the username is "www.jake" whick would make it easier to print business cards. ;)
