I have noticed I still have some old folders in my Programs Folder from progs that were removed long ago.

Is it safe to just delete these unused folders from the Progs folder or is it best to check the registry or both?

Thanks

If you've already uninstalled the program, it's generally safe to delete their folders.

Microsoft has interwoven OS and programs (especially .dlls) so much that you almost never remove everything with "Add/Remove". Usually empty folders and shortcuts are left littering the landscape, often dlls have been modified/replaced on install so that manually removing the ones that came with the deleted program can and do affect other long standing programs.

I suggest you read Microsoft "Knowledge Base Article - 310750":

[support.microsoft.com ]

It applies directly to xp but there are similar articles saying almost exactly the same for every other Microsoft OS.
