good idea?

I run a small but growing site by myself called widget.com where I have a growing online guide to widgiting.

Basically, lots of content.

If I wrote a short daily blog about what it is like to start a website, sort of like "the story of widget.com, from the beginning" perhaps that will bring more people to my site since they will get to know me as a person. I could have it at blog.widget.com OR maybe even a widgetblog.com

Anyone tried this? Does it work?

Sorry, don't have an answer to your actual question, but I do have a comment on part of what you typed:

sort of like "the story of widget.com, from the beginning" perhaps that will bring more people to my site since they will get to know me as a person

It most likely will not bring new people, but it could help your chances of having return visitors. It helps knowing that there is a "real person" behind all of these bright lights. :)

I have no evidence to back this up, but what I will say is that I had a great many friends who can get very addicted to blogs/online diaries a while back. If they think it's a good one then they'd probably tell friends and anyone who'll listen. So you probably ~would~ get more visitors you your site, albiet strange ones with too much time on their hands.

I've considered it myself before but was held back by the thought that if you miss updates then your readers loose interest and get peeved. Moral of the story? Unless you have as much free time as those who would be reading, it won't work. :)

Good luck if you decide to go ahead.

A lot of people are using blogs nowadays.
It's a great idea, if you're the blogging type.
What you need:
1) Proficience in written communication-- you have to like to write little essays, and be able to do it quickly.
2) A knack for writing things in an interesting fashion
3) A good, sustainable theme-- so, you'll have plenty of material to write about
4) An interested audience. You'd be surprised at the people that'd be interested.

If you've got those things, a blog's a great idea. If you just have a vague sort of notion that these bloggy thingies increase link pop... blogging's probably not for you. :D

Good luck.

blogging's probably not for you

I agree. I think zulufox's best bet is to just put up an information site, and constantly add to it rather than use a "blogging enviornment" (as if we needed any more of those)

I'm doing both blogging about some of my web projects and writing static pages about my site as well.

It seems to work fine but there are a variety of topics covered in my blog other than just the sites I work on/with.

Adding a blog to an existing site to help add content faster is a good idea but don't forget about the rest of your site.

The blogging community is huge and there are advantages to using a blog for some content but your efforts shouldn't all go into adding blog entries.

It's a good idea in my opinion.

Seems to work well for projects/hobbies/undertakings that I've worked with.

I think the best way to go about it is just write content for a normal site. I still think your best bet is to get widgetguide.com or something to that extent, and constantly add it rather than have it be a blog.

When searching for widgets, most people I know skip these "blog" sites in the SERPS. I, along with many others, disregard ANYTHING written in blogs. I hope others will begin doing the same to kill the "blog trend".

The "blog trend" you refer to is changing. Sure there will be the suicidal teenage girls that whine and cry about their ex-boyfriends on blogs, that will never go away.

However, blogs are starting to become a quicker, simpler way to provide meaningful content to the masses.

Once you've got the general layout down it's type and publish.

I agree there is a great divide between personal **** blogs and commercial related blogs.

Do a google search for "baliblog" and you'll see a moveabletype based site that is basically a daily updated guide to bali, complete with hotel guides, destination guides, advertising, and a huge following. I know for a fact (I visited the guy in bali) that he earns his living from the blog. This site has TONS of great content and is writen in an interesting way.

My idea is to use the blog as a new section where I can link to related news stories, articles, websites, combined with my own work. Its not really an issue of working on the blog INSTEAD of my main site, but rather working on the blog IN ADDITION to my main site. My sites articles take alot of research, so smaller things I wish to include such as commentary to articles and new stories etc.. etc. can be placed in an area that isnt an official site article.

That's exactly the same problem I was running into zulufox. My next site article is a checklist of sorts but it will take a week or so of research, design, SEO, etc. before it's available to the public. But, to just jot down a news tidbit the blog is perfect. To describe theories the blog is perfect.

There a pros and cons to everything.

Oh if you visit that blog I talked about, take a quick peek at an article and you'll see probably the BEST webwriting I have seen (GREAT intertwining of photos and text).

I think I just posted one of those :-)

It's a great idea! I wouldn't have time for it.
