What makes a good host?

... and how do you find them?

OK, I am on my third host now and seem to be getting regularly dissappointed. The last was great, good service, cheap, fast support, feature packed with mySQL and PHP as standard, and unlimited diskspace...

...but the bandwidth quota was lousy, even on the top package and the costs for exceeding the quota were huge. Then I discovered that they didn't provide access to raw log files, or root access, nor did they support .htaccess, and they wouldn't install perl modules on request and so, as I started to learn a bit more about webmastering and wanted to spread my wings, i found they were clipped.

I know it is against the rules to post actual company details, but I am finding it close to impossible to find an impartial guide to hosting anywhere on the internet. Even the rankings that claim to be objective are simply thinly veiled devious marketing by unscrupulous hosting companies.

I need a good host... preferably in the UK. Am I asking too much? is it always a trade off? where do I find a GOOD host? I feel as if there is some secret that noone is letting me in on! :(

Stop trying to pay $9.95/mo.

I honestly believe you get what you pay for in the hosting space, period. Some hosts may charge you $50/mo. for a service you might be able to find elsewhere for $9.95/mo. They may provide better service, and accomodate special requests.

If you're paying $3.95/mo. for gigs of space and lots of bandwidth, expect shoddy service. Cheap, Fast (Big), Good - pick two.

BTW - Don't expect root access on a shared server. And bandwidth charges will usually be high, because bandwidth isn't cheap. At all.
