Pop-Up Graphics

Is it a legitimate/acceptable way of informing visitors?

Heya

We currently know that many visitors to our website are from the United States, but this is a fact not reflected in our sales.

Having trawled through WebmasterWorld I have come to the conclusion that I need, somehow, to point it out to our 'trans-atlantic friends' that we are very happy to sell them our goods - or words to that effect. One idea of doing this involved creating a pop-up up that says something along the lines of 'US Credit Cards Accepted'. However, both my head and heart disagree with this. I have thought how many times pop-up windows have put me off a website!

Any ideas?

Cheers

Bloomberg I think reported that 20% of the internet users already have a pop-up blocker. Next year, so will IE. You will have to re-do it then for sure. I don't think it is time well spent. Maybe a JavaScript ticker or something?

I think you're right about the pop-ups. They annoy me considerably and I have a pop-up blocker which is one of those software tools that I wouldn't be without. 20% have a pop-up blocker now? Well, as soon as one is integrated into IE, that percentage will rocket.

A javascript ticker's a good idea, though it would have to stand out. Any other suggestions?

Not really. Maybe a banner with a waving US flag and animated letters? We are a patriotic bunch you know ;-))

I had gathered that!

Flags will be better than text I think. Hopefully when the Americans see their lovely stars and stripes they just won't be able to help themselves from getting out their credit card!

Well, you could put that message somewhere eye-catching on the site without the pop-up ... I'd try that first, before I messed around with pop-ups.

I think that pop-ups must be a last resort. Rather than text, which has a habit of disappearing into background, I like the idea of litte flag graphics.

Maybe include pricing in Dollars (or just a basic conversion) and mention the shipping costs upfront (that's if there is shipping).

You could create a whole 'US Special Deal click here' page, just to drive your US traffic to it and make your site appear to be 'Momma's Apple Pie Friendly'.
