Can we compile (if not done yet, didn't find a resource with the site search) a little resource for server owners on how to secure the server for the various server types and budgets?

Thanks, Jens

What is the relation between budget and security? All I can think of is that enforcing and maintaining security takes time, and time is money. Or are you talking about hardware? Proper locks on the doors to the server room?

I was actually after software like Virus protection, firewall (as an alternative to a hardware solution) etc...
Symantec for exampledoes not really offer an attractive server package...
Thanks, Jens

Hmm.. depends on the purpose of the server, and on the OS. For example, ipchains for Linux is a free, 100% configurable firewall program. And AFAIK an ordinary web server, whether Windows or *nix, doesn't need protection against viruses.

But I guess that f.i. network file servers require a different approach.
