As suggested by Hypergeek in another thread ([url

Someone should start/post a list of open source/freeware programs

What's your favourite freeware? List name, description and why you like it.

Mine:

Mozilla
Browser
Because it's faster, simpler and easier to use than it's 'mother' Netscape Navigator

Irfanview (technically it's "postcardware").

One of the best image editors available. And I just found out recently it can use PhotoShop filters.

xplorer^2 (and it's predecessor 2xExplorer) - Great dual-pane file manager.

FileZilla - Great FTP client.

7-Zip - Great package manager.

HAPedit, CrimsonEditor, Context - Great file editors / mini-IDEs.

Perl / PHP - Great scripting languages.

Cygwin (and gcc / mingw) - Great POSIX layer for Win32 (and great compiler (ported through the Cygwin layer)).

QCD player, Foobar2000, Media Player Classic - Great media players.

VirtualDub(/Mod) - Great A/V en- / transcoding software.

Apache, Xitami - Great web-servers.

Audacity - Great soundfile editor.

GeoShell - Great desktop manager / Windows Shell replacement.

...freeware is just great all around!

About a dozen or so more as well but I'm too lazy to switch windows and go digging though program files right now ;p

Ps. SourceForge is a suberb place to find good, free (and opensource) softwares for those who dont know about it.
