Selective hotlinking.. not on sites, but on images

Allow certain imagesto be hotlinked but not others

Hello,
this is my first post here. I'm glad to join this community!

Now, my problem.. :) I've searched on this forum and on Google and could not find what I wanted.

I need to allow hotlinking of certain images (half a dozen, for link exchange purposes), and forbid hotlinking for the rest of them. How may I do that?

I read about putting them all in a directory and allowing access to that directory, but if it exists, I'd like another way of doing that.

If no other solution exists, what code should I put in the .htaccess file, and what else should I do to protect all directories but the one containing my hotlinking-allowed ones?
