Could this impact brand perception on searching when poeple switch over to other chat room providers?
Chatrooms on MSN's other global sites will either be supervised - or moderated - by an adult 24 hours a day, or will be on a credit card subscription-basis only.It means no free, unmoderated chatrooms will exist anymore on any of MSN's global network of sites.
I worked as a chat room moderator. The only time chat was un-moderated was for a few hours middle of the night Pacific Time. And trolls knew it. I got off work at midnight and would often go around saying goodnight and then skulk around invisible for a while afterward to catch them, or work on sites late and stay on IM so I could be called in by buddies who were still there if they needed help.
That site has eliminated open chat altogether as of a few months ago, has no more paid chat mods, which is a saving of considerable expense, and has only scheduled hosted chats.
It's also a revenue issue - chatrooms don't generate banner ad clicks too well. Plus, if there are certain types of problems it can lead to legal expense.

Do you mean because of the security issues or some other reason?

Do you mean because of the security issues- yep, but i do agree with ukgimp that kids will go to unmoderated chat rooms, but i hope that eventually things like that will be eradicated, although it seems most unlikely.
Hopefully with all the current media exposure that kids will wake up to the dangers of chat rooms. Maybe MSN closing their chat facilties will further reinforce that warning.
