A client requested a popup for a newsletter sub. With all the popup blockers out there, they seem a waste of time now, but I thought I should check my assumptions. Has anyone seen any statistics on how many people now use popup blockers?

Not sure, but I know that I do. Plus, if you add in the amount of people that disable JavaScript, then I'm sure it is over 50%.

From my own experience, I'd say that everyone who
- knows how to block them
- can afford to block them (mind you I cannot due to the nature of tome of the work that gives me sustenance)
blocks them sooner or later

1-st category is numerous, but it tends to shrink as people get more experience (over 50% worldwide at the moment IMHO, but don't be surprised if it comes down to like 10% in less that a couple of years)
2-nd one is negligible and will NEVER bring in a single click-through

I hate popups almost as much as I hate those who create virus'. I installed a program called Ad-Aware and ran it against my server. I have several registered programs installed on MY OWN machine (How the heck they got there I don't know) that would fire off popups based on keywords I would type into Google or Yahoo, etc. I removed those registry settings that were known to Ad-Aware to be rogue or trojan applications and my popup nightmare has disappeared.

You'd be surprised to see how much of the headache resides on your own machine. Try that Ad-Aware program. They even have a free version that you can download.

A client requested a popup for a newsletter sub.

In January I ran a pop up on the home page refering to another page for a special event.

Nearly all were seen. Goes to show ;o)
