Hello,
we both know the frequent updates impact

but is it good for any purpose to stick a piece of code that takes care of showing "last update ..."
any reason for aside communicating with viewers?
thanks

regards
Henry

I don't have an answer to your question, but every time I see one of those it's usually something like:

Last Updated May 12, 1994

I've always thought that it's a bit pointless, but it can be of value for some users, especially on an news type site. So for me I guess it depends on the nature of the site. Do you think that your users will get value from being able to see when the last change was made?

If you are updating regularly, then your fine, but like TMI says, if you don't update, it becomes downright embarrassing.

I can't see any real reason for it except to inform visitors. Spiders and other apps look at the date modified.

LOL@ "Last Updated May 12, 1994"

I frequently place a last modified on pages for two reasons.

1. To let the viewers see that the page has been updated recently and that the information is current.

2. To let the viewers know that the information is old and, perhaps, out of date.

For any "last-modified on" for this second purpose I wouldn't recommend that a scripted date inclusion method be used, since it's a little too easy to accidentally "update" your purposefully "old" pages this way. Instead I typically hard code the date in.

Using a "last modified on" in your pages certainly doesn't carry any weight in search engines (That is unless you want to use the date as a keyphrase). However, a search on the Google forum here will turn up a few threads on the usefulness of having your server correctly send a Last-Modified header, which can lead to more efficient Google spidering.

Caine has a good point it shows that we are working for our clients :)

the update in my case is slightly different
for I was ref to a site that is business dedicated and primary news oriented
therefore my chief editor is daily updating with "new news"
that of course bear today's date
