I'm fairly new to the web. I design and "operate" several web sites, continuing to build them on a day to day basis.
One is a travel site that may be too general ... or too big. Problem is, I have sections that get very little attention from the search engines.
You can only put so many keywords on the index page.
The site is over 200 pages of textual content. I have recently reorganized it into directories such as
[bestplaceintheworld.com...]
[bestplaceintheworld.com...]
I can search on "west of the moon craters" and don't get the /westofthemoon/ index page, but the site home page ... and much farther down in the listings than I honestly think it deserves to be.
Some of these /directories/ have 10-40 pages.
I have flattened out at about 40,000 to 45,000 page views per month,
I still have lots of content that needs to be developed to round out the site. I predict the site will mature at about 500 pages unless I change my approach.
I once tried subdomains, but none got included in the SEs, possibly because of some mistakes I made and possibly because I was too impatient.
So I guess I am looking for general recommendations for the best direction(s) to take.
I recently "spun off" one directory and registered a domain name. In the 3rd month it is doing 15,000 - 20,000 page views <grin> ... but I think it is an exception.
Oddly, it has *very few* backward links, almost no text and yet has 15 - 20 top ten listings in Google ... and MSN brings up a close second for referrers.
I spun off a second directory and it has fallen flat at about 300 page views per month.
A third is too new to call, but looking to be somewhere in the middle.
Anyhow, I'm rambling, but would appreciate any constructive comments and advice.
I've run some large directories also, you have to be careful about linking and keeping the code clean, and also only link in pages/categories which are already filled.
Maybe if you could be more specific what you are trying to get to and what you'ev already tried.

Um ... almost don't know how to answer without sounding flippant. What I want to do is get the directories, or sub topics indexed better, increase the traffic, etc.
The links are all good, says Xenu ... the code is pretty clean ... very little javascript, no flash, fast loading pages, optimized graphics.
I could write 5000 words and not tell all of what I have tried.
I guess I'm looking for more general recommendations so I have to ask general questions.
